MEETING CALLS FOR VATICAN GUIDANCE ON ENVIRONMENTAL, CORPORATE ETHICS

Catholics are looking for guidance and a larger voice from the Vatican on ethical principles for the world of finance and the environment, said some participants attending a Vatican meeting on social justice in a globalized world. Some 200 people involved in social justice issues for the church gathered May 16-18 for an international conference sponsored by the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace. The meeting celebrated the 50th anniversary of Blessed Pope John XXIII’s social encyclical, “Mater et Magistra.”

The gathering also was designed to find ways that the church’s social teaching, including Pope Benedict XVI’s 2009 social encyclical “Caritas in Veritate,” could be applied to bring greater justice to a globalized world… Read more »

VATICAN ASKS BISHOPS TO TURN IN GUIDELINES ON ABUSE

Bishops have been given a year to turn in guidelines for dealing with the sexual abuse of minors by clergy or religious, according to three Vatican documents made public today.
The request is made in a circular letter, along with an introduction and a summary, published by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.
The letter provides a broad set of principles to help bishops’ conferences to establish guidelines, thereby ensuring that the universal Church will respond to sexual abuse consistently from one country to another… Read more »

CONFERENCE TO FOCUS ON CHURCH’S SOCIAL TEACHING

A conference sponsored by the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace will reflect on the Church’s social doctrine, especially in the context of modern-day globalization and injustices.

In regard to the results expected from the congress, Bishop Mario Toso, the dicastery’s secretary explained, “We hope there will be a new awareness of the importance of the mobilization of all ecclesial communities and the various lay associations and movements in respect to the great problems of the world.”

PASS HI+HU CELEBRATION FOR THE FAMILY

On the occasion of the International Day dedicated to the Family, which was celebrated on May 15th, 2011, the Diocesan Commission for the Family together with the Pastoral Secretariat of the Church in Malta organized a day long activity for all Maltese families, at the grounds and complex of the Malta Fairs & Conventions Centre (MFCC), Ta’ Qali.
