CATHOLIC AGENCIES DISAPPOINTED WITH COMMITMENTS FROM G-8, G-20 SUMMITS

G8 and G20 summit

A $7.3 billion pledge, including $5 billion from the Group of Eight countries, is not enough to stop millions of needless deaths among pregnant women and young children and is not enough for the G-8 leaders to say they’ve lived up to their responsibilities, representatives of Catholic aid groups said. “We’re disappointed with the G-8 leaders,” said Michael Casey, executive director of the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace, after the June 26-27 G-8 meeting in Huntsville, Ontario… Read more »

Daily Gospel – 8th July

Matthew 10,7-15

As you go, proclaim that the kingdom of Heaven is close at hand. Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those suffering from virulent skin-diseases, drive out devils. You received without charge, give without charge. Provide yourselves with no gold or silver, not even with coppers for your purses, with no haversack for the journey or spare tunic or footwear or a staff, for the labourer deserves his keep.   … Read more »

SPAIN READIES FOR HISTORICAL PAPAL VISIT

Pope in Spain

Benedict XVI’s trip to Spain this year for the jubilee year celebrating the Apostle James is a first in history — a Pope has never expressly gone to Spain for the event.

Benedict XVI will arrive in Santiago on Nov. 6, Archbishop Julián Barrio Barrio affirmed on Tuesday at a press conference regarding the papal visit.

The Santiago prelate noted the uniqueness of the trip: “It is the first time in the history of the Church that in a holy year the Pope has wished to come expressly,” said the archbishop, who clarified that Pope John Paul II visited this city in 1982 — which was also a jubilee year — “but he did so on the occasion of the pastoral visit he made that year to Spain… Read more »

VATICAN CONFIRMS BENEDICT XVI’s UPCOMING UK TRIP

Pope to visit UK

A Vatican spokesman is confirming Benedict XVI’s September 16-19 trip to the United Kingdom. The priest noted that the Pope will visit the queen “at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh,” Scotland… Read more »

Matthew 9, 32-38

They had only just left when suddenly a man was brought to him, a dumb demoniac. And when the devil was driven out, the dumb man spoke and the people were amazed and said, ‘Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.’ But the Pharisees said, ‘It is through the prince of devils that he drives out devils.’ Jesus made a tour through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and curing all kinds of disease and all kinds of illness… Read more »

Daily Gospel – 5th July

Matthew 9,18-26

While he was speaking to them, suddenly one of the officials came up, who bowed low in front of him and said, ‘My daughter has just died, but come and lay your hand on her and her life will be saved.’  Jesus rose and, with his disciples, followed him.  Then suddenly from behind him came a woman, who had been suffering from a haemorrhage for twelve years, and she touched the fringe of his cloak,  for she was thinking, ‘If only I can touch his cloak I shall be saved.’  Jesus turned round and saw her; and he said to her, ‘Courage, my daughter, your faith has saved you.’ And from that moment the woman was saved… Read more »
