The areas known as Swatar and Il-Qattus, originally formed part of Msida and Birkirkara (St Helen). When development increased in these areas, the need for greater pastoral care became a necessity. In 1989, Rev Can Carmel Busuttil started celebrating Mass in the MUSEUM Centre and in some private houses until the Pastoral Centre was built. The new church was completed in 2004 and by a Decree dated 3rd December 2006, Swatar became an Autonomous Pastoral Zone. Swatar was declared a parish by Archbishop Mgr Paul Cremona OP, by a decree on 8th November 2008. The Parish Church is dedicated to the first maltese canonized saint: Saint George Preca.
